Pediatrics is the area of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children and adolescents. Physiotherapy, an aspect in healthcare that deals with identifying, correcting, alleviating and preventing acute or prolonged movement dysfunction of anatomic or physiologic origin. Paediatric Physiotherapy involves assessment, diagnosing, treating and preventing neurological, developmental, cardiorespiratory and orthopaedic conditions in children with a focus on improving function and increasing independence. Pediatrics is the area of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children and adolescents. Paediatric Physiotherapy involves assessment, diagnosing, treating and preventing neurological, developmental, cardiorespiratory and orthopaedic conditions in children with a focus on improving function and increasing independence. There is an array of conditions that can affected the growing child. Notable among these are;

Cerebral Palsy

It is the commonest amongst the conditions treated by a Paediatric Physiotherapist. A group of disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing or infant brain. Causes include Labour complications, teratogens, brain malformations, genetic syndromes, chromosomal abnormalities, infections and preeclampsia. It is a disorder with symptoms including stiff muscles, weakness, tremors and changes in gait.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC)

It is a condition that causes a newborn to have stiff, crooked, and contracted joints at birth that causes a loss of range of motion in more than one joint (hands, feet, hips, knees, elbows, shoulders, wrists, fingers, toes, the jaw and the spine).

AMC is a non-progressive condition that is diagnosed at birth. The primary impairments of children diagnosed with AMC are decreased joint movement and decreased muscle strength and bulk.

Erb's/ Klumpke’s palsy

They occur when there’s an injury to the brachial plexus, specifically the upper brachial plexus at birth. The most common cause is stretching of the baby’s head and neck in opposite directions during delivery. It is characterised by weakness in the affected limb, Numbness, tingling, or loss of sensation and loss of range of motion.

Muscular Dystrophy

It is one of the groups of genetic disease characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal or voluntary muscles which control movement.

All types of muscular dystrophy are caused by defects in genetic makeup (the units of inheritance that parents pass on to their children).

Developmental Delay

Delays in retaining gross motor milestones such as sitting, crawling, rolling, standing, and so on are referred to as developmental delays. These delays can be due to a number of factors including Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Torticollis

Torticollis or wry neck is a condition in which the neck movement is limited in one or more directions.

Clubfoot (Talipes)

A condition in which one or both feet are twisted into an abnormal position at birth.

Postural anomalies

Added to the rise in the use of smartphones, tablets and other screens, is the amount of time many children now spend doing school work and exams, a lot of children are by and large coming up with Postural problems which hither to was not the case.

The Role of Physiotherapy in Paediatrics

Paediatric physiotherapy helps children with motor disabilities to improve their gross mobility and functionality in order to maximize their independence. Physiotherapy interventions focus on movement and improvements in function to increase both the child’s and family’s quality of life.

Physiotherapy has a positive and significant impact on pulmonary function, motor control, muscle strength, and physical endurance in paediatric patient with chronic conditions such as cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Physiotherapy Interventions at Nadkof Physiotherapy and Wellness Center

Our physiotherapists are effective in the management of perinatal conditions, conditions diagnosed in early childhood, and injuries sustained throughout childhood and the transition to adult care.

Here our interventions focus on movement
