Spondylosis

Spondylosis may apply non-specifically to any and all degenerative conditions affecting the spine. Or in other words, spondylosis is a type of arthritis caused by wear and tear to the spine. Cervical spondylosis is the most common type of progressive disorder that affects the neck during ageing. Other types of spondylosis include thoracic spondylosis which affects the middle spine, the lumbar spondylosis which affects the lower back and multilevel spondylosis which affects more than one spine.

In a patient with spondylosis, the spine is compressed by a narrowing of the space between the vertebrae causing a variety of health problems from back pains to neurological problems. The space between the discs in the spine becomes narrowed causing the patient to develop numbness, tingling sensation and pain which may radiate from the area.

Spondylosis is a form of back pain and is an important clinical, social, economic and public health problem affecting the worldwide population.

The most common symptoms of spondylosis are: Pain (dull or sharp), Muscle spasms, Local soreness upon touch, Weakness or numbness in the limbs and Radiating symptoms.

Spondylosis can be prevented or the symptoms ameliorated by; Regular stretches, using the right techniques when lifting, maintaining proper sitting, standing and sleeping postures, wearing of comfortable low-heeled shoes, maintaining a proper nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight.

The management of spondylosis spans from the use of corticosteroid injections, NSAIDS, muscle relaxants, Physiotherapy and surgery

The Physiotherapy management consists of a multidisciplinary approach, which includes Exercise therapy, lumbar traction, manipulation of the spine, massage therapy and Lumbar back supports.

There is a plethora of interventions used in the management of spondylosis, the most important of all is patient education. Educating the patient may include reviews of lumbar anatomy, explanations of the concept of posture, ergonomics and giving appropriate back exercises.

Back Support can be beneficial for patients suffering from chronic back pain. It occurs to limit spine motion, stabilize, correct deformity and reduce mechanical forces. There is no consensus if it may function as a placebo or really improve pain and functional ability.

Lifestyle Modifications: Instructions in body mechanics focuses on low-load concepts. These include avoiding forward bending and rotation of the neck, avoiding prolonged extension of the neck, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing and the use of a proper ergonomic chair for sitting etc.

Education

Education of our clients about their conditions and the necessary treatment to be administered is our priority and this serves as our hallmark to excellence. It is one of the first and important things we do at Nadkof Physiotherapy. Pain Management: At Nadkof Physiotherapy, you are assured of a substantial decrease and the alleviation of your pain. We help alleviate pain by the use of varied pain management techniques and evidence-based interventions like Trigger point release, manual manipulations, exercise therapy, thermotherapy, cryotherapy, electrotherapy, etc.

Flexibility Training

Musculoskeletal problems usually present with tightness which decreases muscle flexibility. With the use of techniques like manual stretches and Trigger points release, and joint mobilisations and manipulations, we help relieve muscle and joint stiffness and improve flexibility in our clients. Trigger points are present in all patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Clients who visit Nadkof Physiotherapy undergo trigger point release to alleviate their pain. Tight muscles produce pains and weakness, hence the need for them to be relaxed by the use of trigger point release.

Posture Correction

As a result of Back pains, most people tend to compensate to the side they find relieve. In doing so, they begin to deviate from the normal posture there by developing tightness. There are also congenital and environmental factors which lead to the acquiring of Poor postures. A bad posture can cause discomfort or pain in the body and can be associated with activity limitation. At Nadkof Physiotherapy, we correct and encourage good postures in our clients through a well-planned exercise regime.

Strength Training

Back pains usually present with tightness and weakness of muscles. After reduction of pain, we also train and strengthen the muscles like those of the core and other extremities in order to improve function and prevent complications of injuries in the near future. Clients are taken through a well-structured exercise therapy to help strengthen individual areas of weakness and subsequently connect the kinetic chain.

Lifestyle Modifications

Our physiotherapists provide guidelines to lifestyle modifications for our clients. We advise and instruct on maintenance of good body mechanics during working hours, at homes, driving, sleeping, bending, standing and the use of a proper ergonomic chair for sitting.
